Steve Hodge

Steve has been involved in Newcastle racing for five decades, starting out as 12-year-old schoolboy helping out at stables at weekends before taking out his training licence in 1986. He believes in an individual approach and has been able to extract the very best from each horse he trains.

His horsemanship and hands on approach are key elements to his success as a trainer. A boutique stable providing an intimate racing experience for every owner. Steve has around 15 horses in his stables and believes in a hands-on approach to each of his horses to ensure they receive the upmost care and attention.

Steve started training at Broadmeadow racecourse in 1986 and has remained a stalwart of the mid-coast racing scene ever since. He attributes much of his training skills to the great Roy Hinton who was a leading Hunter Valley trainer of his era and was one of the men behind the Newcastle racing boom in the 1970’s. In fact, Steve started training in his own right on the day Roy Retired.

There have been many good horses under Steve’s care but his stand out performers include SILENT IMPACT, winner of the Group 2 Newcastle Cup and Group 3 Gosford Cup and GIEGERON – winner of 2 x Inverell Cups. If you have Tried Horses looking for a change of environment or a young horse ready to be educated and put through its paces then Steve would be happy to hear from you.
